The seat for Position 5 being vacated by ECISD trustee Randy Rives is no longer empty.

Yollie Wilkins claimed the seat Saturday with 52 more votes than opponent Lorrie Vickers

"It was very close," Wilkins said. "I just think that people looked at my qualifications and realized I was the best person qualified for the job."

Wilkins received 646 votes or 52.1 percent, while Vickers received a total of 594 votes or 47.9 percent.

The race for Position 5 was a close one with both candidates touting their life experiences as reasons to be named the winner.

"Both campaigns worked hard," Yollie's husband, John, said. "It was a hard-fought campaign."

Yollie Wilkins will begin her term as Ector County Independent School Board trustee for Position 5 when she's sworn in May 20.

Vickers congratulated her opponent Saturday evening shortly after the final results were revealed.

Vickers said she didn't know whether she would run again in the future.

"I don't know - it will be something that I have to pray about," Vickers said.

Yollie Wilkins said the first she thing she plans to do is take a little trip and relax.

"I need to thank everyone who supported me," Yollie Wilkins said. "Their help was just incredible - absolutely incredible."
