Two hospitalized after gunfire at West Odessa Race Track

A suspect in a Sunday night shooting in West Odessa turned himself in at Ector County Detention Center around 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Hector Miguel Sanchez, 20, faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection to the shootings of two people at West Texas Racetrack, 14350 West University Blvd, said Ector County Sheriff's Sgt. Gary Duesler.

Ivan Perez Navarrette, 15, was listed in stable condition Monday at Medical Center Hospital. Jeremy Albert Garcia, 21, was treated and release at the hospital.

Duesler said investigators would question Sanchez Monday evening if the suspect agrees to it.

"He's not even formally been charged," Duesler said. "We haven't talked to him."

Bond hasn't been set for Sanchez.

Sheriff's officials were called to the track around 7 p.m. Sunday. Bullets reportedly pierced two cars and an SUV.

The horseracing track typically draws between 3,000 and 5,000 people for races, Duesler said.

It is owned by Andres and Cecilia Estrada of West Odessa, said Karen McCord chief appraiser for the Ector County Appraisal District. The property is valued at $143,193.

Efforts to reach the Estradas were not successful Monday.

ORIGINAL STORY POSTED AT 9:19 P.M. SUNDAY

WEST ODESSA Two Hispanic males were taken to Medical Center hospital early Sunday night, and sheriff's deputies are on the look out for a gunman after a shooting in West Odessa.

Sgt. Gary Duesler said a caller tipped off the Ector County Sheriff's Office at around 7 p.m. that shots were fired in the 14000 block of West University Boulevard at West Odessa Race Track, a horse-racing venue.

Duesler said the victims' names, ages and conditions were not known about two hours after the shooting took place. An ambulance took one victim to the hospital, and a private car took the other. Bullets pierced two cars and an SUV.

Duesler said the investigation is just getting under way, and he needs information from anyone who may know what exactly happened.

"We need some help on this," he said.

Maria Sanchez was in the crowd when gunfire rang out. She said she heard heated words exchanged and then about six gun shots. Everyone ducked for cover and eventually left on their own, Sanchez said.

Duesler said West Texas Race Track gets a crowd of up to 5,000 on a regular basis.
