Andrews to purify water standards

The City of Andrews is looking to purify its water standard water not because the water is dirty, but because the Environmental Protection Agency increased their water standards.

Andrews City Manager Glen Hackler said in 2006, the EPA lowered the acceptable levels of natural occurring elements in ground water such as fluoride and arsenic from 50 parts per billion to 10 parts per billion. Hackler said Andrews levels fall to around 30 parts per billion.

Working with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the city of Andrews is trying to find a way to purify the water in a cost efficient way.

“TCEQ is interested in Andrews because we’re just large enough, but not large per se,” Hackler said.

Hackler said city officials will continue meeting with TCEQ and plans to have a solution by 2012 and have it implemented by 2013.
