Comments 0Waste Control Specialists has filed an application for the establishment of maximum disposal rates for low-level radioactive waste with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
According to a news release, the facility operator for the disposal site in western Andrews County filed two alternating rate schedules. One includes only unlimited waste generation for Texas and Vermont, the two states that are part of the Texas Compact. The other includes limited disposal from states outside the compact.
Bill Lindquist, Waste Control Specialists chief executive officer, said the company’s disposal rates would be 10 times lower with limited waste importation from generators outside the compact. He said the waste generators could then pass the savings on to their customers.
Waste Control Specialists has processed and stored radioactive waste at its site since 1997. It is the only commercial facility in the United States licensed to dispose of Class A, B and C low-level radioactive waste.
