OC board to vote on tax rate

IF YOU GO:
  • What: Odessa College Board of Trustees meeting.
  • When: 7 p.m. Tuesday.
  • Where: Joe Zant Community Room, OC Student Union building.

After three meetings dealing with the Odessa College tax rate for fiscal year 2011-12, the OC Board of Trustees will have a final vote on the matter at Tuesday’s regular monthly meeting.

The board met to propose the tax rate Aug. 4 and held public hearings Aug. 15 and 18. Despite an average increase of $38.30 for Ector County homeowners as a result of the proposed rate, no one addressed the board at the hearings.

Most of the tax increase comes as part of the debt service rate, which will be 3.86 cents per $100 property tax valuation. The maintenance and operations rate of 15.84 cents remains the same as the current fiscal year.

The debt service rate was added as a result of a $68.5 million bond package that Ector County voters approved in November 2010. The package helps pay for several new buildings at the school, as well as renovations of existing facilities.

The board will also consider:

  • A request to sell property for less than the market value.
  • Bids for buses.
  • Annual review and adoption of the investment policy.
  • The list of authorized investment business organizations.
  • A proposal regarding foreclosed properties.
  • Approval of the redistricting plan.
  • The organizational structure for 2011-12.
  • An informational item about changing the uniform election date.
