Two killed, three injured in Martin County crash
MARTIN COUNTY Two Good Samaritans were killed and three other men seriously injured when a highway accident between a tractor-trailer and pickup in Martin County turned even more tragic as another tractor-trailer collided with the two wrecked vehicles and involved a fourth one.
Some details remained unclear about the two-stage incident that occurred about 7:30 p.m. Monday on Highway 176, six miles east of Highway 349 in Martin County.
A preliminary report by Big Spring Department of Public Safety Cpl. Tommy Salmon stated a 1992 Peterbilt towing a trailer was westbound on Highway 176 when it was turning onto a private road.
The report stated a westbound 2007 GMC pickup collided with the trailer of the 1992 Peterbilt, leaving both in the roadway. A 2001 Peterbilt with a trailer, also heading west, stopped on the shoulder, along with an unspecified eastbound vehicle, the report stated.
The report stated that while the occupants of these vehicles were trying to assist with the first wreck, an eastbound 2007 Peterbilt with a trailer collided with the GMC, killing the driver of the 2001 Peterbilt who’d stopped to help and an occupant of unidentified vehicle.
The report stated 50-year-old Otis Nesbit, a truck driver from Millersview, and 61-year-old Antonio Mujica, of Andrews, were outside of their vehicles when they were caught in the second accident. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
Oilfield workers Tom Jackson, no age given, and Robert Jackson, 57, from the GMC pickup had been wearing their seatbelts. Tom Jackson was sent to University Medical Center in Lubbock while Robert Jackson was sent to Odessa Regional Medical Center, the report stated.
Eric Pitino, truck driver of the 2007 Peterbilt, was sent to Midland Memorial Hospital, the report stated.
The driver of 1992 Peterbilt, Larry Dale Floyd of Midland, was not listed as having any serious injuries in the accident.
It was still unclear from the preliminary report early Tuesday morning who had been driving the GMC pickup and whether Mujica was a driver or passenger in the vehicle he’d come from.
Robert Jackson and Eric Pitino could not be located as of Tuesday morning, but Tom Jackson was listed in the surgical intensive care unit of UMC in Lubbock.
