A 39-year-old Odessa man successfully dodged a train Tuesday morning after an accident left him stranded on the rails west of Penwell.
Jesus Martinez was driving to work around 5:15 a.m. westbound on Interstate 20, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. But the front passenger’s side tire of his Ford F-250 blew near the 100 mile marker, sending Martinez’ truck into a side skid and into the bar ditch before it began to roll.
The truck came to rest sideways on the tracks with Martinez inside, the DPS reported. But Martinez was able to break out his window and crawl to safety before a train demolished his truck within minutes.
Martinez suffered no injuries, DPS reported. He escaped without this phone, leaving him unable to call for help or warn authorities of his stranded vehicle. The train’s cab suffered damage but minor enough that it was able to continue on its route.
DPS Sgt. Hunter Lewis, who investigated the crash, said he did not cite Martinez.
“I told him to go buy a lottery ticket,” Lewis said.
