Former PHS teacher indicted

Former Permian High School teacher Robert Young has been indicted by an Ector County grand jury on one felony count of having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Young, who resigned from his position as a math teacher this summer, was arrested in June and accused of having a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old Permian High School student. The student was not in any of Young’s classes during the supposed relationship, which reportedly began about May 15. School officials began their investigation after receiving an anonymous tip.

An affidavit of probable cause states that Young frequently picked the student up in his truck and drove around with her between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. Young is accused of kissing the girl and engaging in “heavy petting.”

The affidavit further states that Young sent nude photos and videos of himself to the girl.
Young had worked for the Ector County Independent School District since 1992. The teen involved is a 2010 Permian graduate.

Young, who is free on $20,000 bond, is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday. The charge of inappropriate relationship between an educator and a student is a second-degree felony and carries a possible punishment of two to 20 years in prison and a fine not to exceed $10,000.
