BIG SPRING Big Spring State Hospital recently presented service awards and special awards to the volunteers who provided more than 7,000 hours of service this year to the patients.

>> Ruth Nanny was named the Jack Y. Smith Award recipient, the volunteer organization's highest honor. The award is presented in recognition of Smith, one of the hospital's earliest and most fervent volunteers and supporters. Jack Y. Smith first presented the award to the Midland Auxiliary 38 years ago. Nanny works at The Chalet, second-hand shop. She makes an 80-mile trip to Midland and picks up rejects from a second-hand shop, takes them home and cleans them and puts them up for sale at The Chalet.
