Council to consider requests

Organizers of various Permian Basin events will make their annual pitch for funding from the city’s hotel/motel tax fund at Tuesday’s Odessa City Council meeting.

Twenty-two organizers are requesting funding from the fund. Including $16,439 in administrative fees, a total of $2,274,718 is being sought from the 2010-2011 budget, which is more than $120,000 less than was sought last year.

In 2009, the council awarded a total of $2,233,400.

The Odessa Convention and Visitors Bureau’s sports event recruiting is seeking the largest amount, $865,232, the same amount it’s been awarded the last two years. The Odessa Council for the Arts & Humanities is asking for $330,791, which is less than the $419,919 it got last year.

The next biggest check is being requested by the Odessa Jackalopes hockey team, which wants $144,206, a jump from the $50,000 it got last year.

Meanwhile, Odessa Crime Stoppers and Odessa Teen Court will seek their share of money from the city’s general fund, while Keep Odessa Beautiful is asking for $134,229 from the solid waste fund.
