A human skull that was found Thursday in the 400 block of Bunche Street has been identified as “historical or archeological” by examiners.

According to an Odessa police news release, the skull was originally found Thursday afternoon when a handyman found the skull while cleaning out a storage unit.

The cranium was taken to the University of North Texas in Denton to be investigated by Dr. Gill King, director of the Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology and Human Identification at the college.

King said the find was a human skull without a mandible and could be between 500 and 1,000 years old.

“It is considered an archeological specimen and probably that of a male, 25 to 40 years of age,” he said.
