Midland man dies in Pecos accident

REEVES COUNTY A 29-year-old Midland man was killed in a two-vehicle accident Monday morning just south of Pecos.

Jamus Cooper was the passenger in a pickup traveling north when at about 9:45 a.m., the driver, 29-year-old Derrick Broaddus of Amarillo, attempted to pass a 2010 Ford Hybrid, also traveling north on State Highway 17, a Pecos Department of Public Safety representative said.

The pickup collided with the rear of the Ford Hybrid and rolled to the right, ejecting Cooper and Broaddus, the representative said.

Cooper was pronounced dead at the scene, the representative said.

Broaddus was transported in critical condition to Odessa Regional Medical Center, although he was not listed as a patient Monday evening, according to an ORMC representative.

No one in the Ford Hybrid was injured, the representative said, and the driver maintained control of the vehicle.

Cooper and Broaddus were not wearing the seatbelt, the representative said.
