One dead in accident outside of Kermit
WINKLER COUNTY A 28-year-old man was dead following a head-on collision Wednesday evening just outside of Kermit.
A Department of Public Safety report by trooper Alonzo Urquidi stated that a 1993 Ford F-350 driven by 24-year-old Timothy Garrett Lane of Odessa was eastbound on Highway 302 about half a mile east of Kermit when he attempted to pass another vehicle and collided head on with a westbound 1998 Saturn driven by Silverio Martinez III of Freeport at about 5:43 p.m.
The report stated Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene while Lane was transported via air ambulance to Medical Center Hospital in stable condition with injuries to the head and chest caused by blunt force trauma. However, the report stated Martinez had been wearing a seatbelt while Lane had not. Both men were described as oilfield workers.
The report stated Lane had attempted to pass another vehicle with "insufficient clearance."
