Ector County, already Republican-dominated, is about to get a darker shade of red Saturday.
Michael Reagan, son of 40th U.S. President Ronald Reagan, is scheduled to speak 7 p.m. Saturday at the MCM Grandé Hotel Fun Dome at the Ector County Republican’s 26th Lincoln Day Dinner fundraiser.
But that’s not all. Texas Lt. Governor David Dewhurst is also scheduled to be in Odessa to present Reagan with the American flag that flew over the state capital on Feb. 6 — the day that would have been the former president’s 100th birthday.
Reagan has openly supported Dewhurst in his bid for the Republican nomination for the senate seat that will be open after Kay Bailey Hutchison’s current term expires.
“(Dewhurst’s) office called me and asked if he could come out and make the presentation and introduce (Reagan) at the same time,” Ector County Republican chairwoman Tisha Crow said.
Call’s made to Dewhurst’s officer confirmed he would be in Odessa, but no immediate comment was given.
The Lincoln Day Dinner is a fundraiser held by the county’s Republican Party to raise funds for expenses within the party, Committee Chairwoman Debbie Donaldson said. Taking about six months to plan, members selected to the committee begin looking for prominent Republicans to come speak at the event. Donaldson said former speakers include Karl Rove and Star Parker.
“Since it’s an election year and Regan was such a popular president, we felt it would be a good draw for our community,” Donaldson said.
Tickets are still available for the event and are $75 for individual tickets. Sponsorship tables are also available and are priced at $2,000, $3,000 and $5,000. Those who purchase tables will be eligible for a meet-and-great with Reagan, receive a copy of his latest book and get it autographed.
Donaldson said she was personally excited to hear what Reagan had to say; both politically and economically.
“I know he’s been in the area before, but I didn’t have the opportunity to attend any of those functions,” she said.
