Rain moves through Basin

Triple digit temperatures forecast for Monday

An unexpected sight came down for a short time in Odessa on Saturday afternoon. Rain.

Krista Johnson, 24, said she was surprised when a few sprinkles turned into a downpour.

"It kind of looked like it would rain, but I thought just a few sprinkles here and that would be it," Johnson said. "It sprinkled and stopped, and I thought it was over. Then it just poured down."

Johnson said she hoped the precipitation would stop the fires that have seemed to plague Odessa lately.

"We needed the rain," she said. "Maybe there won't be as many grass fires now. I want it to continue to rain tomorrow, it was nice."

Unfortunately for Johnson, National Weather Service meteorologist Samantha Smith said the rain would be short lived.

"Sunday is going to be mostly sunny," Smith said. "The high will be 92 degrees, and there doesn't look like there's a chance of rain."

KOSA-TV meteorologist Mike Moritz said the rain would be of limited help in fighting grass fires.

"We've had quite a bit of shower activity today," he said. "I'd say it'd be a minor help in limiting grass fires."

Moritz said Odessa received .07 inches of rain. Smith said a total of .04 inches of rain was recorded at Midland International Airport.

Smith said the National Weather Service recorded a total of .04 inches of rain at Midland International Airport.

Even though the rain was short lived, Johnson said one of her younger family members enjoyed the downpour.

"I called my aunt and she told me that my cousin was dancing in the rain," she said. "She was amazed because she hadn't seen rain in forever."

Moritz said the cool temperatures would move out of the area by Monday to make way for 100-degree temperatures.

"We're going to see triple digits next week," he said. "Summer has arrived."
