[AP] Judges: April 3 primary in Texas still possible

SAN ANTONIO There's only one week left to salvage an April 3 primary in Texas.

A San Antonio federal court on Friday ordered the state and minority groups to compromise on redrawn political districts by Feb. 6. The three-judge panel said that if both sides don't reach an agreement by that deadline, the primary will be pushed back.

The court did not indicate a new primary date if a deal isn't reached. But state Democratic and Republican leaders told the court that an April 17 primary is possible if interim maps are in place my mid-February.

Minority groups sued the state over newly drawn political voting maps passed by the GOP-controlled Texas Legislature. The dispute is over whether the new map fairly reflects Hispanic growth.
