Police are looking for a man whose pickup hit an H-E-B stocker who was trying to stop the pickup driver as he tried to steal a basket of groceries at about 10:15 p.m. Thursday, Odessa police Cpl. Sherrie Carruth said.
Elberto Ribera said he was struck after finding the stolen basket in front of the truck while he was looking for the man. He said a customer at H-E-B, 3801 E. 42nd St., saw the thief and the basket, pointed it out to Ribera and Ribera tried to retrieve it when the man jumped in his truck and a woman driving it struck him in the knee. Ribera said he then got out of the pickup’s way as it sped off, leaving the basket in Ribera’s possession.
Ribera said he felt sore from the attack but was otherwise OK.
Police are looking for a white man, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 135 pounds in his late 20s. He had dark hair, brown eyes and was wearing a black long-sleeved shirt and jeans.
The pickup is a red 1993 Dodge, police said.
Anyone with information on Thursday night’s incident at H-E-B or the suspect can call the Odessa Police Department at 333-3641 or Odessa Crime Stoppers at 333-8477.
