Accused of assaulting two people, abducting child

HOBBS, N.M. Hobbs police officers found and arrested a 28-year-old man Friday afternoon who had warrants from Andrews in connection with two assaults and then the abduction of his 9-month-old son, Hobbs police officer Mike Stone said.

Jesse Jaramillo Sr. of Hobbs was arrested after police recognized him in a vehicle in the 3000 block of North Grimes Street at about 4 p.m. Friday. Stone said he was not sure whether Jaramillo Sr. was the driver or the passenger, but the car did not match the 1993 Nissan Maxima described in the Amber Alert. Police arrested him without incident, Stone said.

Jaramillo Sr. was being held as a fugitive from justice in the Hobbs city jail Friday and is waiting for a hearing Monday, Stone said.

A call to Andrews police chief Bud Jones was not returned Friday.

Police in Texas and New Mexico were put on alert after police say Jaramillo Sr. allegedly assaulted someone — who Jones previously described as his estranged common-law wife and her boyfriend — with a knife Wednesday morning. Police say Jaramillo Sr. took his son Jesse Jaramillo Jr. and fled from Andrews, prompting the Andrews Police Department to issue an Amber Alert. Hobbs police found Jaramillo Jr. at Sr.’s mother’s house in Hobbs late Wednesday.
