BIG SPRING A former Big Spring police officer was killed Sunday while working for a private security company in Baghdad.

Big Spring Police Sgt. Tony Everett said 36-year-old Steven Evrard was killed by an improvised explosive devise — so were two other employees of the security company SOC-SMG Inc. The men were working a security convoy.

Everett said Evrard worked at the Big Spring Police Department for five years before leaving for Iraq in August 2006.

Besides being co-workers, Evrard was also Everett’s son-in-law.

“He was a hard worker,” Everett said. “He was a real go-getter.”
