A jury in Fort Stockton rendered a verdict of nearly $2.4 million Thursday against Nabors Well Services of Houston, according to a news release from attorney Rick Plezia of the Plezia, McLemore, Reddell, Ardoin and Story law firm in Houston.
The judgment was in connection to a fatal accident in 2004 involving one of the company’s trucks The jury ruled Nabors owed the family of Los Angeles resident Aydee Romero $2,395,000 in damages after an accident that killed Romero and injured six other occupants in a Suburban.
Pecos County deputy clerk Andi Martin said the verdict was delivered to Nabors at about 11 p.m. Thursday. As of Friday afternoon they had not responded to it.
The crash took place at about 4:30 a.m. Dec. 20, 2004, on Highway 285, about 10 miles south of Fort Stockton. In 2004, the Department of Public Safety reported Romero and several other people were in a 1993 Chevrolet Suburban when it collided with a 1993 Mack truck that was attempting a left turn. The Suburban went into a side skid and rolled, throwing Romero out of the SUV. Driver Martin Soto and the other occupants were also injured.
According to the release, the jury ruled that the Nabors truck made an improper turn while trying to enter an oilfield road, leading to the crash.
