    Shooting investigation continues

PECOS COUNTY The Texas Rangers are still investigating a case in which a Pecos County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man.

Deputy Connie Bassham and Deputy Ronnie Turner responded about 4 p.m. to the Fort Stockton Deluxe Inn, 500 E. Dickinson Blvd., in reference to a man who was acting belligerent in the parking lot, Pecos County Sheriff Cliff Harris said.

"He was screaming and hollering and when they got there, they tried to calm him down," Harris said. "They got him calmed down and he started up again…when they tried to place the subject under arrest, a scuffle broke out."

Harris said "they were scuffling pretty good" when Thomas Reid took Turner’s gun from his holster and fired off one shot that went astray and did not injure anybody. Reid then pointed the gun at Turner and that is when Bassham fired two shots from her own gun killing Reid, Harris said.

Reid’s body was taken to Tarrant County for autopsy.

Harris said the Texas Rangers are handling the investigation, but he does not expect any charges to be filed against either deputy.
