30-year-old succumbs to injuries from Saturday accident

An early-morning accident on Saturday in front of Permian High proved fatal for a 1996 graduate of Odessa High.

Frances Cervantes, 30, died shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday at Medical Center Hospital from serious injuries she sustained in a rear-end collision.

Cpl. Sherrie Carruth said Cervantes was traveling west on 42nd Street in a 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage when it collided with a white Cadillac at 1:59 a.m. Saturday.

The Cadillac, driven by 30-year-old Joshua Walters, was stopped at a westbound red light at the intersection of 42nd Street and Dawn Avenue.

Carruth said Cervantes took the brunt of the impact; there was very little damage to Walters or his Cadillac.

Cervantes' family has scheduled a rosary at 7 p.m. today at Odessa Funeral Home, and a Mass celebration at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
