ECHD to vote on spending for UTPB nursing program

The Ector County Hospital District already helps fund nursing programs at Texas Tech and Odessa College, and at their monthly meeting Tuesday the board will vote on whether to also fund an upcoming four-year nursing degree at University of Texas of the Permian Basin.

“We felt that this was a good way to support these schools,” MCH CEO Bill Webster said.

Should the board approve the Endowment Trust Agreement, $1 million will be placed in American State Bank and UTPB will be able to draw from the interest annually to help fund the nursing program, Webster said.

The director for the new nursing program, Dorothy Greene Jackson, started June 1, 2011 and students can declare nursing majors and begin taking prerequisite classes for the program, which is tentatively set to start in fall 2012, according to Odessa American records.

Previously, Jackson had worked as an assistant professor at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center’s School of Nursing in Odessa.

She also headed the associate degree nursing program and taught in the licensed vocational nurse program at Odessa College, in addition to other work in private practice and at Medical Center Hospital.

Should it be approved, the Agreement will go in effect March 1, Webster said.

In other action the board will:

  • Recognize Wendy Wood-Collins, nursing, Rodney Venters, non-clinical and Elizabeth Navarrete, clinical as employees of the month.
  • Review meeting minutes from January.
  • Vote on the Endowment Trust Agreement for the benefit of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
  • Address the committee reports.
  • Address the inter-local agreements request to sell property for less than market value.
  • Hear the Texas Tech report.
  • Hear the Chief Executive Officer’ report.
