Slippery road conditions bring wrecks

As a snow-rain-sleet mixture of precipitation fell early Monday, roadways became somewhat slick as one driver found out while driving westbound on Interstate 20 near Dixie Avenue where his truck went off the roadway into a sign.

The driver was not injured in the incident.

As of 2:45 p.m., the city of Odessa had reported responding to 12 accidents Monday.

Department of Transportation's 10 Tips for safe driving

1. Don't overestimate your ability in bad driving conditions.
2. Slow down. Wear seat belts. Never drink and drive.
3. Put extra distance between you and the car in front of you.
4. Don't slam the brakes. The wheels could lock, causing your car to slide.
5. If your car starts to slide, turn your wheels in the direction that it's sliding to straighten it out.
6. Drive on Interstates and one-way roads whenever possible.
7. Turn on your lights to see and be seen.
8. Clear snow and ice off the headlights, tail lights, mirrors and license plates.
9. Be aware that bridges, ramps and overpasses may freeze first.
10. Check the windshield wipers to make sure they are not frozen to the windshield.
