[NR] Midland to perform maintenance on tank

City of Midland

MIDLAND The City of Midland will be performing maintenance on the Shell Elevated Storage Tank.  This tank is located near the intersection of Midland Drive and Andrews Highway.  It is a 1 million gallon tank and was built in the early 1960's.  It was last coated in the mid 1990's.

A contractor will be removing all coatings from the inside and outside of this tank as well as making structural repairs.  Since the primers were lead based, the tower will have to be completely encapsulated to catch any lead containing particles.

This will also necessitate the draining of the tower.  System operation does not allow for the complete draining so some of the water will remain in the tower after it is isolated.  In order not to waste this water, it will be transported to an area near the A Street Duck Pond and released on the street and allowed to drain into the pond.  It is necessary for this water to run down the street to allow the chlorine in the water to neutralize so as not to harm the aquatic life in the pond.

We appreciate your patience and will maintain our commitment to maintain your system and provide the most reliable supply possible.
