Regional meets back on?

At 11:07 a.m. Wednesday, the University Interscholastic League posted an announcement on its website saying all regional track and field meets were canceled.

After a reported barrage of phone calls to the UIL complaining, there may be some change in the works.

South Plains College sports information director Joe Walker confirmed Wednesday afternoon that the UIL has been in contact with his school about moving the Region I-1A meet to May 15 and 16.

Odessa College athletic director John Wilfert also said he has been working all day trying to get the Region I-2A meet rescheduled.

"We're working on it right now," Wilfert said. "I've called in there (to the UIL) and we are working on some dates.

"It is being discussed, though there is no confirmation on anything yet, but we are trying to do everything possible on our end to make this thing work. We feel it is too big of an economic impact for this not to work."

Crane boys track and field coach Henry Anderson also has been told the UIL is attempting to go on with the regional meets.

"After a rash of calls to the UIL, (Dr. Charles Breithaupt) called awhile ago and said don't give up hope," Anderson said. "They are trying to work it to postpone the regional meets, where we can have a regional meet and then a state meet.

"It is looking a little better, at least. There is a little hope, which is what we want."

The state meet is scheduled to be held in Austin as a three-day meet May 14-16. The UIL would take the top four performances for each event from each region based on district meets for participants to qualify for the state meet.

If the regional meets are rescheduled for May 15-16, the state meet would have to be moved at least one week back to May 22 and 23.
