Alpine woman's club hosts year-end luncheon meeting

GFWC Woman's Club of Alpine recently held their year-end luncheon meeting at the Jeff Davis County Library in Fort Davis.


Club members Mary Vongsavath, Joyce Wright, Amanda Smith, Eunice Vincent, Ann Talley, Catherine Travland and Elizabeth Foley, participated in the "Hats, Gloves, Bags are still part of GFWC tradition" photo contest.


Special guest Catherine Travland, Western District president elect, installed new club officers. New officers are: Joyce Wright, president; Amanda Smith, secretary; Vongsavath, parliamentary advisor; Gail Shugart, vice president; and Janith Stephenson, treasurer. Each officer received a GFWC pin and the responsibilities of their offices.


Travland announced that Vongsavath was the recipient of the GFWC Red Star at the State Convention and was also chosen as the Outstanding Clubwoman Volunteer 2008 and Lead Representative 2008 at the Western District Convention.


The club won first place for their club yearbook both at the State and District Conventions and first place for leadership, scholarship, outstanding program, empowering women, domestic violence and resource conservation programs at the district convention.


Vongsavath presented Travland with a gift of appreciation. Vongsavath presented the club yearend review.


The recipients of club scholarships are: Kaela Donaldson, Sul Ross State University scholarship; Chelsea Millican, SRSU nursing scholarship; Teresa Tan, medical scholarship; Corazon Ramirez, medical scholarship; and Sydnee Gatewood, HOBY ambassador.
Club members discussed the Alpine Independent School District superintendent search committee meeting held in May and the TFWC Western District Summer Workshop coming up July 19 at the Mitchell Ranch in Sanderson.
