School board to discuss lawsuit

Suit seeks abolishment of Bible course

The Ector County Independent School District’s board of trustees will consult with its attorney Monday on a lawsuit filed Wednesday.

The suit requests the district abolish its Bible course claiming it violates individual religious liberties.

Trustees plan to meet in closed session and later consider approving an action regarding the lawsuit during a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the boardroom at 802 N. Sam Houston Ave.

The American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Texas, People for the American Way Foundation and national law firm Jenner & Block LLP filed the suit Wednesday in Midland federal court on behalf of eight parents who say they don’t agree with how the Bible class is being taught.

The course was implemented in August after the board approved adding the class in April 2005.
