Odessa College adjunct photography instructor Beckwith Thompson stands with one of her photographs from her ‘Whimsey' series during the opening reception for the photography exhibition, ‘Mind Over Matter: Enigmatic Variations' on March 20 at Houston Community College Central's Gallery. The exhibit will be on display through Tuesday.  Thompson has six photographs from her series in the FotoFest 2008, an international photography event held every other year in Houston. Houston Community College Central, in partnership with FotoFest 2008, is hosting a photography exhibition. The exhibit is devoted to the work of visual artists using digital media to explore surrealism. It is curated by Caslin Gregory and Associates. These artists challenge assumptions of what constitutes ‘perceived reality.' With its emphasis on the links between reality and dreams, surrealism holds a special appeal for photographers, whose essentially realistic medium can be used to create richly suggestive images. Digital ‘slight of hand' allows contemporary artists to conjure mysterious worlds that hover between the real and the fantastic. Tom Chambers, Sue Liska, Anne Arden McDonald, Marie Swartz and Charles Wiese also submitted work for the exhibit.
