>> Air Force Staff Sgt. Martin C. Venegas was recently honored at the Real Heroes Breakfast hosted by the Three Rivers Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Beale Air Force Base, Calif.
Venegas previously served in South Korea, Italy and Iraq, before being stationed at the Beale AFB.
While in South Korea he was among the first responders when a U-2 reconnaissance planed crashed. In Iraq, he helped contain a riot by more than 200 Iraqi detainees. Without regard for his own safety, he assembled a team of four to rescue security forces pinned down in a guard tower. Deployed a second time to Iraq, he was assigned to protect coalition forces and civilians. He identified and prevented kidnapping of an Iraqi dignitary while patrolling the U.S. Green Zone in Baghdad. "His quick reactions to a sensitive situation saved two lives," according to a Beale AFB account.
Venegas is the son of Lea Venegas of Odessa and is currently waiting on deployment orders.
