Charges in Hobbs shooting

Teen arrested in connection to drive-by shooting

HOBBS, N.M. Police arrested a 16-year-old Eunice teen in connection to a drive-by shooting of another 16-year-old who was driving along Leech Street Friday afternoon in Hobbs, according to a news release from Hobbs police Deputy Chief Donnie Graham.

Jorge Castillo was charged with one count of shooting at or from a motor vehicle resulting in great bodily harm. He was being held Monday in the Lea County Juvenile Detention Facility, the release said.

According to the news release, the victim was driving north on Leech Street at about 3:30 p.m. when he passed a gold-colored four-door vehicle driving in the opposite direction. He heard a gunshot and realized he was hit in the abdomen.

The release said a passenger in the victim’s car took over the wheel and drove him to Lea Regional Medical Center, where the victim told police what had happened to him.

After an investigation, police detectives went to Castillo’s home in Eunice and arrested him there. The release said they found a spent .45-caliber shell casing and a .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol believed to have been used in the shooting.
