Second ECHD property tax hearing unattended

While the second public hearing on the Ector County Hospital District’s ad valorem tax rate was, like the first, devoid of comment there were some unusual visitors in attendance Tuesday.

“It’s not too bad,” Odessa College student Robert Hisaw said about the meeting.

Hisaw and his peers were attending four public meetings for their OC business classes.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t a lot for them to see since no one from the public came to the meeting to give comment on the tax rate.

The rate for ECHD’s 2011 ad valorem tax, or property tax, was proposed at an earlier board meeting.

The proposed rate was 5.2081 cents per $100 valuation and is lower than the 2010 rate of 5.5201 cents per $100 valuation, dropping the average homeowner’s amount from $55.78 to $54.18.

A public hearing for the capital and operating budgets for 2011 is scheduled to be held at 5 p.m. Sept. 27 in the auditorium at Medical Center Hospital.

Following the hearing, the budget and the ad valorem tax rate will be adopted by the board that same day, chief financial officer Robert Abernethy said.
