Man nabbed returning loot

Police say they caught a man suspected of theft in a most unusual way: When he tried to return the money.

Mikel Robert Grant, 26, has been charged with theft, a state jail felony.

Grant was arrested in connection with money taken around 8:45 p.m. Saturday from Smoker's Outlet, 5100 N. Dixie Blvd. That's when a white male entered the business, demanded money and left with an undetermined amount of cash.

After the report, Odessa police set up a perimeter in the area to try to locate the suspect. Officers found two moneybags but could not find the man, according to a news release from Cpl. Sherrie Carruth.

Then they caught a break.

Carruth said that the man called the store to tell them he was bringing the money back. He was met with a pair of handcuffs ready and waiting.

Carruth said that investigators with the Crimes Against Persons Unit determined the incident was theft instead of robbery because Grant did not threaten or injure the clerks.

After police detained him, an arrest warrant was issued for Grant. He was being held Tuesday at the Ector County Detention Center on a $15,000 bond, the release said.
