Fourteen more candidates have signed up to run as mayor or commissioner in the Gardendale special election next month.

The candidate filing period was extended after several Gardendale residents complained that they were given no opportunity to pick the candidates that would represent them if their township is incorporated in the special election.

“We don’t have a choice,” Gardendale resident John Modisett said in March. “It’s not right.”

The original candidates were chosen by Dr. Will Evans, Gardendale Landowners Association president. Most, if not all, were GLOA members. The filing date to run in the special election was Monday, March 14.  The write-in candidacy filing deadline was, March 21. In consultation with the Texas Secretary of State’s office, the deadline was extended to 5 p.m. Wednesday. The deadline for write-in candidates is April 18. Residents must register to vote by 5 p.m. Thursday to vote in the May election.

GLOA, a non-profit corporation founded in November 2010, wants to incorporate the area because of the intrusion of oil companies and drilling rigs on their land. Right now, the area is an unincorporated part of Ector County. It has no self governing power, such as incorporated cities as Odessa or Midland.

GLOA members said if they can establish a township and set up a local government, they can enact laws to limit what the companies can do on their land. Some residents have said they are against incorporation because they don’t want higher taxes and bigger government.

Early voting starts May 2 and runs until May 10. Election Day is May 14th. Candidates running for mayor in each township will run against each other and the candidate that has the highest percentage of the vote will win, Mitzi Scheible, Ector County elections administrator, said. The two commissioner candidates with the highest vote totals will be elected in each township.  There will not be a run-off election, she said.
