Pretrial hearings include murders, gambling cases

Another man accused in a gambling promotion ring sat before a district judge Tuesday for his pretrial hearing.

Ngoc Luong Hung, 50, is charged with engaging in organized criminal activity.

His defense attorney, Tony Chavez, said they have been offered a plea deal and are still discussing it.

Chavez also requested an interpreter as with several other people charged in the gambling ring.

“He thinks he speaks English, but I don’t understand a word,” Chavez said.

The five gambling ring locations were raided by the Odessa Police Department on July 2 after a months-long investigation.

Christopher Antonio Redic, 25, also had a pretrial hearing in which defense attorney Adrian Chavez had to recuse himself.

Redic is accused of murder in the Dec. 28, 2010, shooting death of Freddie Hall. Adrian Chavez realized he previously represented Hall in a felony case.

“We want to avoid any appearance of impropriety,” 161st District Judge John Smith said, and appointed defense attorney Jeff Parras to the case.

Another murder case was discussed as the trial for Clifford Paul Woods will be set sometime after May 1.

Woods, 38, is accused in the November 2010 stabbing death of Brian Allen Dillon.

Defense attorney Lawrence Barber said he has not received a plea offer in the case and it will most likely go to trial.

Luther Carl Johnson, 46, is charged with sexual assault in connection with a report that he had sex with a woman while she was sleeping.

Parras, the defense attorney in the case, said he will file for a bond reduction and has received a plea offer.

Johnson claimed in an affidavit that he believed the woman was his wife, who was sleeping in the same bed.
