The controversy over whether Leon Fuller needs a teaching certificate to be athletic director for Ector County Independent School District is now a dead issue.
Based on a ruling from the Texas Education Agency, ECISD officials have determined that Fuller does not need a teaching certificate to do his job.
"Given his position and responsibilities, given these circumstances, he does not need one," Interim Superintendent Hector Mendez said Wednesday.
The ruling focused on the fact that Fuller appraises "coaching activities that do not involve teaching the state curriculum," Mendez wrote in a memo to the board earlier this month.
The board voted 4-3 in June to hire Fuller. He started working under a two-year contract with the district in July.
