Lighter likely started Andrews house fire
ANDREWS The fire that engulfed a house and killed two people Saturday morning in Andrews was likely caused by a barbecue grill lighter, according to the State Fire Marshall’s Office.
A news release from Andrews said that the fire originated in the room of 4-year-old Braydon VanZant, who died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Edna Jones, 76, also died from carbon monoxide poisoning in the fire.
Firefighters arrived at 8:15 a.m. Saturday at the 809 Northeast Third St. house to find an older man holding a child outside the home. The house was fully engulfed in flames.
According to the release, a metal shaft from a grill lighter was found in the frame of the boy’s mattress. Investigators said it is possible the boy was playing with the lighter before the fire started, the release said.
Andrews Police Chief Bud Jones said Curtis Jones and 2-year-old Aubrey VanZant were transported to Lubbock hospitals. Their statuses and whereabouts were not available Monday.
