FBI warning
Scam artists canvassing West Texas area
The Midland resident agency of the FBI has issued a warning about calls being made to West Texas residents as part of an apparent fraud scheme.
The callers claim to be from the U.S. Census Bureau and ask those they call to disclose personal information that could be used to committ identity theft, the FBI reports. The callers have threatened to pursue legal action against those who won't answer the questions, according to an FBI news release.
The Census Bureau only takes a census every 10 years, and the next one isn't scheduled until 2010.
The FBI said census officials will show identification and never ask for Social Security numbers, dates of birth or bank account numbers.
