Prospective students to get taste of college experience

Students looking for higher-education opportunities in the Permian Basin area may need to come to Falcon Day.

Falcon Day is an event put on four times a year at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin for its prospective students. It will take place today this Saturday from 10 a.m. until about 3:30 p.m. with registration beginning at 9 a.m. in the Science and Technology building.

Scott Smiley, director of admissions at UTPB, said Falcon Day has been around in some form for the last 10 or 15 years, but has only been what it is today for the past three years.

“Falcon Day is a chance for students and parents to get to know UTPB,” he said.

Smiley said the event serves as an informational fair as well as an opportunity for prospective students to better familiarize themselves with the university’s student organizations. He said he expects there to be about 65 students at the event.

Javier Zavala, senior economics major at UTPB, said he will be leading student tours and talking to students during Falcon Day.

“They get to look at it from a student perspective,” Zavala said.

Zavala said he started going to college in California but stopped going after one year because he didn’t feel it was right for him. Zavala said when he moved and became familiar with UTPB he decided to go back to school after a three-year break. He said the experience has been great.

“I believe in UTPB,” Zavala said.

James Greer, senior accounting major at UTPB, will also be leading tours at Falcon Day. He said coming from Fort Worth his freshman year was an adjustment that was quickly made through the help of friendly people at UTPB.

“I’ve been enjoying it since day one,” Greer said. “College is real life, and you don’t really know what to expect until you get here.”
