Kay McDowell wanted to show Odessans that the Permian Basin Fair and Exposition acts have talent.

She wanted to so much that she booked Terry Fator, winner of “America’s Got Talent.”

“We’re just thrilled — Terry is a great draw,” she said. “He has a lot of talent and he’s showing it.”

Fairgoers also felt the same about the impressionist.

“I just think he’s great,” Carolyn Sullivan, 58, said. “He’s one of my favorite comedians.”

Fair organizer Woody Kupper said there were 1,500 in attendance for Fator’s performance.

Some people attending this year’s festivities did not go to see Fator but still said they had a good time.

“I wouldn’t go to any other fair other than the Permian Basin Fair,” Megan Walters, 16, said. “It’s always fun.”

Alma, 27, said while he liked all the events, he mainly came to the fair for the Ham Bone Express.

“I like all the events, but these pigs racing are just fun,” he said. “It may seem weird, but I just like them.”

Alma then remembered that there was one more reason why he went to the Permian Basin Fair.

“I forgot to mention,” he said. “I love the food. I’ll probably spend about 50 bucks tonight just on junk food. I’ll probably gain 50 pounds too, but it’s too good.”

With Fator, the rest of the acts and the clear skies, McDowell said the opening day of the fair was a success.

“It’s been great,” she said. “The weather’s been great. There’s a lot going on around the fair grounds besides Terry Fator and they all have been wonderful.”
