Craig not to seek SBOE re-election

Bob Craig announced Monday he will not seek re-election to the State Board of Education, District 15 after 24 years of public service.

"Now is the time for me to step out of public service in the educational arena and allow others the opportunity to serve.  I will continue to be an advocate for topnotch educational opportunities for all students,” Craig stated in a news release.

Craig currently serves District 15 on the State Board of Education and is the vice chairman of the board.  He was first elected in 2002.  Prior to service on the SBOE, Craig served three terms on the board of trustees of the Lubbock ISD beginning in 1988, serving as president 1990-1992 and in 2000-2002.

In 2010, Craig defeated former Ector County Independent School District board member Randy Rives in the Republican primary for the seat, earning 65.2 percent of the vote over 34.79 percent for Rives. Although State Board of Education members are normally elected to a four-year term of office, all seats will be up for election in November 2012 due to redistricting.

District 15 is a vast region of 75 Texas counties including all of the Texas Panhandle, the Permian Basin, South Plains, the Big Country, Concho Valley and portions of the Texas Hill Country.

Craig is a senior partner in the Lubbock Law Firm of Craig, Terrill, Hale and Grantham.
