In a unanimous 7-0 decision, the Ector County Independent School District board of trustees on Tuesday afternoon approved the land purchase for two new elementary schools — one on the north side of Odessa and one the west side of Odessa.
The vote to move forward on the 28-acre lots is one step in a long process to fulfill the $129.75 million bond that was approved by voters in November. The bond will pay for three new elementary schools — the district has not made public the location of the third school site yet — and building additions to the two existing high schools to accommodate the district aligning with the state to have K-5 grade elementary schools, 6-8 grade middle schools and 9-12 grade high schools, as well as make room for the Permian Basin’s booming population.
The site on the southeast corner of 87th Street and North Dawn Avenue comes at a cost of $322,200, while the other parcel located about 1,000 feet south of the corner of 16th Street and Knox Avenue in west Odessa is $323,215.20. The 87th Street school site is near the Ratliff Ranch Golf Links and the Odessa-Schlemeyer Field. It’s also near new home developments, such as Colonial Estates.
The west 16th Street location is a slightly more rural and undeveloped area of Odessa, though it’s also near homes and close to the City Ranch Estates.
The board met in executive session to discuss the contracts and approved them in open session with no discussion. The land owner and district have a 25-day window to back out of the contract, according to the Executive Director of District Operations David Finley.
The board also approved (7-0) the purchase of a home at 1305 Graham Ave., about a block from the north side of Odessa High School, at a price of $115,000. The lot is 7,100 square feet, according to the Ector County Appraisal District and is one block west of OHS. That purchase is a slice of what the district has planned as far as acquiring land near OHS in order to make room for the eventual addition of ninth-grade students.
