Trustees to consider three administrators

ECISD trustees could name a district athletic coordinator Tuesday - as well as three other administrative positions.

There's little clue, however, as to who is on the slate to fill those positions.

Superintendent Hector Mendez declined Friday - through ECISD Communications Director Mike Adkins - to give the names of recommendations for any of the listed positions. Adkins quoted Mendez as saying that he would "prefer not" to release the names of those recommendations just yet.

Trustees also will consider recommendations from Mendez on a Hays Magnet Academy principal, a district instructional officer and a ECISD's Channel 10 manager - as well as the district athletic coordinator.

Earlier this month, Mendez said he'd opened up the longtime vacant district athletic coordinator position to applicants recently because "personnel are needed in the athletics department."

Earlier this school year, the district enlisted the help of a consultant to help in the district's athletics department. In November, Mendez hired former Permian head football coach and athletic director John Wilkins to assist athletic director Leon Fuller and Permian head coach Darren Allman in the decision-making process of scheduling sites for the playoff games.

In addition, former interim athletic director Don Wright worked part-time in the athletics department to help Fuller with daily operations and the West Texas Relays.

An ECISD selection committee forwarded a recommendation to Mendez in May in favor of an applicant for the district's vacant athletics coordinator position.

The committee, led by ECISD assistant superintendent Steve Brown, interviewed four of eight applicants for the administrative job that could pay anywhere from $56,667 to $82,394.

Meanwhile, Adkins said the district instructional officer position would be filled to replace retiring administrator Alma Guerrero, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. Guerrero retires June 30.

Trustees also plan Tuesday to consider approving a district improvement plan and career and technical education textbooks.

Trustees also plan to recognize ECISD police officer Jeff Daniels as the Optimist Club Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, the Odessa High softball team and the Permian High boys' gymnastics team.
