Deputy involved in fatal collision

A man was killed late Saturday night in an accident involving an Ector County Sheriff’s Office deputy.

ECSO Public Information Officer Sgt. Gary Duesler said 34-year-old David Escudero, an ECSO deputy, was driving in an unmarked car with lights and siren to assist in a pursuit that was already in progress. The Texas Department of Public Safety reports Escudero was traveling west on FM 2020 when a 1997 Ford driven by 43-year-old Anthony Neel failed to yield the right of way at the stop sign at Westridge Drive. Neel was not involved in the pursuit that Escudero was called to assist in, Duesler said.

Escudero collided with Neel and sent Neel’s vehicle into a roll. DPS reports Neel was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the Ford, 43-year-old Brenda Madrid, was injured and is in serious condition with head injuries. She was wearing her seat belt. Escudero was also injured and is listed in serious condition at Medical Center Hospital. Duesler said he had surgery on his left leg and also suffered broken ribs. He was wearing a seat belt.
