A Hobbs man has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a Hobbs man on Sunday, according to a release from the Hobbs Police Department.
Emilio Romero, 23, residence not provided, is currently being held on $1 million bond at the Hobbs City Jail.
At 5:45 p.m. Sunday, Hobbs Police Department officers responded to the 1900 block of North Blanco in reference to shots fired. Officers found Stephen DeMoss, 33, of Hobbs suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken to Lea Regional Medical Center where he later died as a result of his injuries, the release stated.
Romero has been arrested in connection with the shooting and charged with first-degree murder, the release said.
The complaint said DeMoss’ 9-year-old son was outside the family home with his father and told police that a sport utility vehicle stopped in front of the family’s residence. The boy told police the vehicle belonged to a woman his father dated for a period of time.
The boy, who was in the garage of the home when the SUV arrived, told police that his father approached the driver of the vehicle and asked him to leave. The boy said the driver then pointed a gun at his father and shot two rounds. The boy said his father tried to run away when the shots were fired.
Surveillance video footage retrieved from a residence nearby show Stephen DeMoss walking toward the SUV that was stopped in the street and then, within a few seconds, attempting to run away from the vehicle and collapsing in a front yard of a residence. The SUV then departed the scene, going north on Blanco.
