Odessa police say that after they arrested a 19-year-old man in possession of marijuana on Thursday night, he offered Cpl. Jeremy Johnson a deal: Don’t charge him with a crime, and get some money in return.
Johnson declined, opting instead to charge the man with bribery and misdemeanor possession of marijuana, according to a police incident report.
The man, Mark Lujan of 444 Brunswick Road, was being held Friday at Ector County Detention Center on a total $51,000 bond.
Police said they initially pulled over Lujan in the 1000 block of Placer Avenue because the vehicle he was driving matched the description of one used in assaults reported a few blocks away.
By Thursday night, Lujan had not been charged in connection with those reports.
Two Odessa men reported someone assaulted them with a bat between 6:30 p.m. and 7:41 p.m. Thursday in the 1100 block of Santa Rosa Avenue.
One of the men suffered two injuries to his head, police reported. The other, who also reported being assaulted with an ice chest, suffered scratches and bruises on his neck, shoulders and face. Both men went to the hospital in a private vehicle.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
