Crane suspect in jail
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Sheriff: Homicide suspect indicates he planted bombs
Law enforcement officials were on close watch Thursday after a Colorado man facing capital murder charges said he planted several bombs around Crane County.
Crane County Sheriff Robert DeLeon said Gillie Thomas Thurby Jr., 42, indicated to officials that he planted the explosives during his run from law officials.
DeLeon said at 9:20 p.m. that there were no bombs found during a search that lasted several hours.
"We investigated it, but we were unable to find anything," DeLeon said. "It was nothing."
DeLeon said that the Odessa Police Department Bomb Squad, the Crane County Police Department and Texas Rangers assisted in the search.
DeLeon said Thurby remained in the Crane County Jail without bond on the murder charge.
DeLeon said bond had been set on three of the four charges. Bond for the aggravated assault on a public servant, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and assault were $20,000 each.
Thurby is accused of fatally stabbing Jorge Silva, assaulting a 25-year-old Crane woman, stealing a vehicle, wrecking a police squad car and fleeing from law enforcement officials.
DeLeon said Silva was stabbed in the chest at about 6:35 p.m. Tuesday in the 1100 block of Southeast Second Street. Silva was taken to Medical Center Hospital where he later died.
