Sixth suspect charged
A sixth suspect to the fatal Oct. 9 shooting of Ray Valdez turned himself over to Ector County sheriff deputies Sunday, Sgt. Gary Duesler said Wednesday.
David Wayne Callaway, 47, of 1510 Beverly St., was charged with "engaging in organized criminal activity, to wit murder" and booked into the Ector County Detention Center. He's being held without bond because of an unrelated parole violation.
The other five suspects that were arrested last week were Kevin Rance Jackson, 35, Billy Wayne Haynes, 32, Hannah Psalm Fierros, 26, Summer Wilkins, 27, and George Buford Scott, 36. Jackson was being held at the Midland County Jail while the others were at the Ector County Detention Center.
Duesler said deputies were still looking for one more suspect.
According to Duesler and Sheriff Mark Donaldson, investigators believe that Valdez had some kind of dispute with the seven suspects inside Odessa shortly before the seven approached him near his house. Investigators think one of the seven suspects shot Valdez in the arm during the second argument.
Valdez was taken by ambulance to the Medical Center Hospital after the shooting, but he died shortly after arrival. Preliminary autopsy results he died from a single gunshot wound that traveled into his chest.
