UTPB Hosts Business Professionals Of America Regional Conference

The Regional Conference for Business Professionals of America was hosted by UTPB on Friday, January 27, 2012.

The conference offered 60 contests to more than 300 participants providing the opportunity for high school students to showcase their business skills and qualify for the state level conference in Dallas February 29-March 3.  The conference emphasizes business workforce education and training which members of Business Professionals of America have received at their respective schools.

Rey Lascano, Melinda Martinez, Carlos Finol, and (others) from UTPB coordinated the conference with competition in the areas of Financial Services, Administrative Support, Information Technology, and Management/Marketing/Human Resources.  Judges included volunteers from UTPB - Shirley Davenport, Prakash Pai, Tony Love, Roy Mendoza, Olga Coe, Gayla Vanzandt, Jack Ladd, and Leslie Toombs; from CBS7 - Billy Pon, Jose Gaona, Catherine Collins and Krista Escamilla; from area schools - Robyn Lisenbee, Becky Ervin, Marsha Hamrick, and Shirley Blevins; Kassi Free with the Department of State Health Services; and area businessmen - Kody Amos, Robbie Bratcher, Thomas and Lisa Robertson, Bryan Pauler, Jamie Berryhill, and Jeff Russell.

Business Professionals of America is a national organization for students preparing for careers in business and office occupations.  The organization’s activities and programs complement classroom instruction by giving students practical experience through application of the skills learned at school.  Business Professionals of America acts as a cohesive agent in the nationwide networking of education and business and industry, and is contributing to the preparation of a world-class workforce through the advancement of leadership, citizenship, academic, and technological skills.

BPA has more than 51,000 members in over 2,300 chapters in 23 states and is a “co-curricular” organization that supports business and information technology educators by offering curriculum based on national standards.

“This organization offers practical business world applications that provides students with leadersip opportunities,” said P. J. McCollum, BPA coodinator and co-regional advisor. “It allows students to give back to their community through service projects and offers opportunities to continue through college.”
