Chocolate philanthropy
It’s a fundraiser that’s quite sweet, savory and oh so chocolaty.
Chocolate Decadence is the fifth annual fundraiser for the Aphasia Center of West Texas. This year, the Midland-based organization said the event is going to be bigger than it has ever been. Executive Director Kitty Binek said they have outgrown the Petroleum Club and have moved the event to the Midland Center. More than 500 people are expected at the event, and the event is almost sold out.
"It’s a great awareness opportunity. It’s a chance for us to educate people about aphasia," Binek said.
The even will feature eats such as bite-sized chocolate pecan pies, tuxedo lady fingers with amaretto cream, chocolate tulips with mousse and almond brittle, and toasted brie crostinis with apricot chutney. A full bar will also be available. Event-goers can also shop the boutique for handmade goodies and CocoArte — hand-painted chocolate paintings complete with a chocolate frame.
The event provides about 35 percent of the Aphasia Center’s annual operating budget. The center’s board members and employees plan the fundraiser for months to ensure its success.
"We are so fortunate to be as well supported by our community as we are," Aphasia Center board president Dianna Williams said.
"It’s chocolate with fun people and great food. It’s going to be a lot of fun," event chair Vicki Rice said.
The event is set up for attendees to mingle, shop and have a good time. But hopefully, those in attendance will indulge in some chocolate with little thought to the caloric intake.
"Who wouldn’t want to experience Chocolate Decadence?" Binek laughed.
